FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who are you, and what is your mission?

1

The Little Lit was created to fill a gap and give more writers and creatives across Aotearoa a place to share their work. We believe great writing isn’t limited to big cities, established literary circles or people with long publishing CVs. There’s talent in small towns, rural communities and everywhere in between, and you don’t need to have been published before to have something worth sharing.

Edited by KT, an award-winning New Zealand journalist and published author, The Little Lit aims to showcase underrepresented voices and give great work the chance to be discovered. If that sounds like your kind of thing, we’d love to hear from you.

Will I receive a free copy if my work is published?

2

Unfortunately, no. The Little Lit is entirely self-funded, with all design, printing and distribution costs covered independently. Unlike some literary journals, we don’t currently have external funding to cover contributor copies. We know some journals have access to that kind of support, and we’ve been working hard to secure it ourselves, but we haven’t had any luck just yet.

Our editions are printed on demand, meaning we print copies that have been ordered rather than keeping bulk stock. Contributors are welcome to purchase a copy through our website, and every purchase helps support the magazine.

What makes you different?

3

We want The Little Lit to be more than something you read once and put aside. Our editions are designed to be collected, displayed on a coffee table, shared with friends and returned to over time. Each issue is printed in A4 on high-quality 150gsm paper stock, giving it a noticeably thicker, more substantial feel than a typical magazine. Inside, you’ll find a curated mix of writing, poetry, profiles, interviews and artwork from independent creatives across Aotearoa.

Do you pay contributors?

4

At this stage, we’re unable to pay contributors, as The Little Lit is entirely self-funded. We’re continually seeking external funding and support, with the hope of being able to offer more to the writers, artists and reviewers who contribute to the magazine, particularly those who contribute regularly.

We know we’re a small independent publication, and that means covering all our own design, printing and distribution costs. For now, contributors choose to submit their work for the opportunity to see it published in a high-quality magazine reaching readers from Northland to Southland. We are so grateful for everyone’s support so far and hope one day we are able to give more back to the people who have helped make The Little Lit what it is.
